Because the spinal cord position shifts relative to the electrode array as a patient moves or changes posture, a fixed stimulation amplitude may result in noxious overstimulation or loss of efficacy through understimulation. Thus, optimal pain relief is achieved through real-time modulation of the electrical stimulation in response to spinal cord motion, a process known as adaptive neuromodulation.
